App Design for Children
Duckometer is an interactive app designed to help children document and explore duck behavior at Lake Mayer in Savannah, GA.
Project Background
Lake Mayer is a beloved public park known for its walking and running trails, playgrounds, basketball and tennis courts, and the popular activity of feeding ducks. This app was created to:
- Enable children to track and record the habits of the ducks at Lake Mayer.
- Foster a community of young duck enthusiasts and observer
Project Goal
This project served as a practice in interaction design and prototyping, combining fun, education, and community engagement.
Visual Experiences
The visual design is tailored for children aged 7-12, who are naturally curious and eager to explore. Friendly content, vibrant colors, and playful animations are designed to immediately capture their attention. Meanwhile, scientific details and clear statistics encourage a deeper understanding of the ducks' habits and their connection to nature, blending fun with learning.
Main Functions
Check duck's real-time behaviors
Children can log in and check other user's contributions that document the ducks' locations and characteristics in real time.
Add a Duck's Information
Users are able to enter in additional information about the locations, the quantity of ducks, and the characteristics of the ducks such as adorableness, fur color, feet color, mouth color, and how active the duck is, etc. By using a sliding scale bar, users could accurately add the information into the system. While users are observing, they can also attach photos or videos to a specific duck.
Check the Ducks' Behaviors
The system also allows users to check the historical trends about the places that ducks are likely to be seen and their behaviors related to the weather in order to facilitate other observers to view the relationship between the locations, types of locations, and lifestyle metrics.
Usability Test Tasks
1. Log in and check ducks’ status each day
2. Add one more duck’s observation information into the system
3. Check the observation history from 01/05-15/05
4. Check the duck’s behavior dashboard from 01/05-15/05 and describe the findings on the dashboard
